Observation Narrative
This plot is in a Juniperus virginiana woodland on a steep, convex, southwest-facing lower to middle slope, bordered above and below by open hardwood forest. The Juniperus woodland is adjacent to an open limestone barren of about 0.5 acres. The open barren may be anthropogenic, so this plot may represent something closer to the natural condition at this site, or it may be successional to something more like the open forest found upslope. Note the high herb and moss cover; there is little exposed rock, gravel, etc., compared to some open limestone woodlands and glades.
0 - 1 - litter, mostly cedar needles
1 - 9 - sandy silt or clay, dark brown, stony with flat 1 x 5 cm pieces
9 - bedrock or a boulder or large stone
