Observation Narrative
The habitat is a concave slope situated at the foot of a massive (ca. 100 m. high) conglomerate sandstone cliff near summit of Cumberland Mountain, just east of Yellow Rock and 0.8 mi ENE of Cranks Gap.. Seepage from the cliff base keeps this wetland saturated at least seasonally and a large downfall at the downslope end appears to further impede drainage of the area. Although canopy coverage here is quite open, this is likely to be a temporary condition (related to the downfall), and all of the species occurring in the wetland are capable of thriving under a closed canopy.
