Observation Narrative
Plot location: flat upland W of Wilcox Lake.
The plot is located on terrace gravel deposits of the "fall line" and documents "flatwood" vegetation with some Coastal Plain affinities. Based on floristic composition, I suspect that the extremely acidic soils of this site have a hardpan, or some kind of less permeable layer beneath the surface sands. The forest overstory is composed primarily of mixed oaks (Quercus alba, Quercus stellata, Quercus falcata, Quercus coccinea), with scattered Pinus taeda. A diverse, ericad-rich shrub layer, including colonies of Gaylussacia frondosa and Lyonia mariana, is present. No herbaceous plants occur in the plot.
