Observation Narrative
Plot location: ravine on W side of Wilcox Lake, ca. 0.45 miles S of the dam.
The site is a steep, mesic ravine slope with extremely acidic, infertile soils. Because the slope is quite short, the plot runs from the base to an upper slope position. About 1 sq. meter lies on the wet bottom of a small stream and contains a few anomalous individuals of Saururus cernuus. The overall vegetation could be characterized as a mixed oak-beech-tuliptree forest with sparse understory and herb layer. Clethra alnifolia, often more of a wetland shrub, forms an 8 sq. meter colony at mid-slope.
