Observation Narrative
Plot location: steep, SW-facing ravine slope ca. 0.25 miles S of Wilcox Lake dam.
This xeric upper ravine slope is heavily dominated by somewhat stunted Quercus montana, but also supports some Q. rubra and Q. stellata. The open forest contains a number of species strongly suggestive of the Coastal Plain and not ordinarily associated with Quercus montana in much of Virginia, including Gaylussacia frondosa, Pinus taeda, and Quercus nigra. Vaccinium stamineum dominates the shrub layer. At the crest of the slope is a prominent Civil War trench used in the defense of Petersburg.
