Observation Narrative
Habitat is a narrow, probably annually flooded, sandy alluvial terrace along the Potomac River, 0.2 mi WNW of where large powerline crosses the south shore of the river at east end of "red rocks" cliff. Acer saccharinum is the overwhelming dominant tree here in a relatively mature floodplain forest stand (trees up to 110 cm dbh). Possibly because of occasional severe floods, the lower woody strata of this forest is poorly developed and the forest floor is a patchwork dense herbaceous growth and somewhat barren sand deposits.
Mapped erroneously as Penn shaley silt loam, eroded steep phase; site is a floodplain inclusion too small to be mapped.
A= medium to yellowish brown sandy loam.
