Observation Narrative
An exceptional seepage wetland for the Piedmont. Compositionally, this plot represents a low-elevation outlier of montane wetland vegetation, of which Fraxinus nigra (black ash), Caltha palustris (marsh-marigold), and Chrysosplenium americanum (water-carpet) are diagnostic species. High pH, Ca, Mg, and total base saturation of collected soil sample indicates that the substrate is weathered from a basic material. Despite its location between two old, weedy agricultural fields, this habitat is only moderately degraded by exotic weeds.
Mean groundwater pH (5 samples) = 6.89. Mean groundwater temperature (deg. C, 5 samples) = 9.38.
