Observation Narrative
Plot documents a wet, forested depression in an elongate, shallow, non-alluvial headwaters in the northern Piedmont Culpeper (Triassic) Basin. Although the surrounding upland forests are all highly disturbed by cutting and grazing, some fairly large Quercus bicolor, Q. palustris, and Acer rubrum occur in the depression. A mix of hydrophytic grasses, sedges, and forbs characterizes the herb layer; Climacium americanum is the dominant bryophyte.
