Plot location: Open outcrop on S side of the Nottoway River, 0.4 miles E of SR49 bridge.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 754058 (UTMN): 4103501.
A gently sloping granitic "flatrock" exposed by the downcutting of the Nottoway River. This habitat is xeric, but may have a little ephemeral vernal seepage through deeper moss mats. Small Juniperus virginiana, Ulmus alata, Pinus virginiana, and Carya alba are present in islands on the rock. Sparse herbaceous vegetations finds footholds in crevices and moss/lichen mats. Characteristic species include Talinum teretifolium, Minuartia glabra, Andropogon virginicus, Dichanthelium laxiflorum, Danthonia spicata, and Carex pensylvanica.
Bryophytes and lichens found on plot are: Cladina spp., Grimmia laevigata, Polytrichum sp., cf. Xanthoparmelia sp.
