Observation Narrative
Stand is representative of the open, stunted, oak-hickory stands that occupy the dry bedrock terrace at Madeira School. The herbaceous layer at this site is dominated by a large clone of the sedge Carex woodii, a sedge more characteristic of the mountains in Virginia. Other graminoids, including Dichanthelium spp., Piptochaetium avenaceum, Melica mutica, Danthonia spicata, and Carex swanii are also common. Damage from deer grazing was conspicuous on Solidago caesia, Vaccinium stamineum, Vaccinium pallidum, Euonymus americanus, and Smilax spp.
