Observation Narrative ? Plot was positioned in a small but representative stand of Pinus virginiana-dominated woodland occupying a high "ridge" of bedrock on the bedrock terrace bordering the Potomac River. Because of very irregular topography, only a 200 sq. m. quadrat was practical. Mineral soil is nearly absent and herbaceous species are very sparse in this xeric environment. Dominant lichens are Xanthoparmelia sp. and Flavoparmelia baltimorensis. Lasallia papulosa is a noteworthy lichen.
