Observation Narrative
This plot captures portion of extensive tidal mud flat dominated by emergent Nuphar advena and submerged aquatic species at the end of transect #1. The plot was placed downstream and ca. 10 m from the transect (and across mouth of small tidal channel that drains tidal hardwood swamp forest) in order to sample highest part of mud flat, which here forms a narrow extension landward, ca. 45 minutes before low tide. Cover of organic matter as a component of surface substrate is probably higher at time of sampling than during most of the growing season due to partial leaffall of Nyssa biflora from adjacent swamp forest. No flowering stems of Eriocaulon parkeri are present. Water depth generally < 1 cm at low tide. Uneven surface of mud flat and accumulation of leaf litter seem to prevent complete drainage.
