Observation Narrative
This plot captures a lower statured, mixed stand of Zizania aquatica, Bidens laevis and Murdannia keisak in a marsh otherwise strongly dominated by Zizania. There are no obvious fluvial or geomorphologic features to explain the large Bidens component. The density of Bidens appears unusually low on both the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers in 1999, as a result of river discharge rates at or near historic lows. Consequently the halinity gradient has migrated upstream, and sites that normally experience freshwater conditions have become oligohaline. Water constitutes 100% of surface substrate cover at mid-tide.
