Observation Narrative
This plot captures what appears to be the largest (ca. 250 sq. m) of three nearly contiguous patches of Acorus calamus upstream from transect #3. The usual early senescence of Acorus has begun, although only near one corner have most stems already become prostrate. What appears to be a muskrat den occurs near this corner as well, although there is no evidence of muskrat activity in the form of channels. A few clumps of Typha angustifolia occur just outside the plot. The marsh surface is partially exposed at unusually high low tide following Hurricane Dennis. The dense Acorus mat hinders the collection of soil.
