Observation Narrative ? Vegetation along the riverine margin forms two compositionally distinct zones spanning a gradient in hydroperiod, with pure and more sparse Nuphar advena in the subtidal zone (which remains shallowly but uninterruptedly submerged at low tide) shifting to Pontederia cordata (with scattered Nuphar) landward. After a discussion as to whether to sample both zones separately or together, the decision was made to capture both in a single plot, given the desire generally to disperse samples along full compositional range of each transect and specifically to capture a patch dominated by Zizania aquatica in the interior of transect #1. The narrow zonation here would have resulted in nearly adjacent and compositionally nearly identical plots had each type been sampled individually. The subtidal zone occupies ca. 60% of the plot area. Pontederia is almost entirely senescent.
