Observation Narrative
Zizaniopsis miliacea is scattered throughout this portion of Gleason Marsh. The vegetation of the plot is compositionally similar to that sampled in plot MATR116. The particular plot location was chosen to represent patches of Zizaniopsis, which, along with Hibiscus moscheutos, constitutes much of the emergent vegetation in this mosaic dominated by low Acorus calamus. Several species - notably Acorus, Schoenoplectus robustus, and Leersia oryzoides - have already senesced, and hence cover estimates may be slightly inaccurate. Numerous curious "arboreal rhizomes" of Zizaniopsis are present.
0 - 1 - undecomposed organic matter
1 - 60 - wet, mucky, dark gray, fibric silt
60 - zone of abundant bark and woody material; nearly impervious at site of single soil core
