Observation Narrative
Shrubs and small trees are scattered on the downstream side of transect #2. Microtopography of this site is complex. Carex stricta occurs on and maintains hummocks; hummock-and-hollow microtopography occurs on half of the plot. A side drainage channel begins at the base of clumps of Alnus serrulata and Rosa palustris near the center of the plot and extends outside the plot to a primary tidal channel on the downstream side. Several species in the plot are largely confined to this channel. Shrub cover in the plot is undoubtedly exaggerated relative to its representation over a larger area, but the plot layout was necessary to minimize the inclusion of Zizaniopsis miliacea and Spartina cynosuroides.
