Observation Narrative
Zizaniopsis miliacea dominates the interior portion of this side marsh; it forms a fringe between a tidal channel and tidal hardwood swamp forest and totals perhaps 0.2 ha. Stature of culms is notably short, and considerable senescence of foliage has already occurred. Spartina cynosuroides is scattered throughout the marsh, so inclusion of this species in the plot is not altogether aberrant. Zizaniopsis is absent from the immediate vicinity of one corner of the plot, where a tidal channel draining the marsh extends inward a few meters and the marsh surface is lower.
0 - ~25 - Dark brown, wet mucky silt, with abundant coarse, fibric organic matter
25 - Soil grades into darker silt with much less coarse organic matter, although fibric material remains; soil becomes darker clay and clay content increases with depth
