Observation Narrative
Zizaniopsis miliacea is the overwhelming dominant in the interior portion of this marsh. Between the plot and the river, the vegetation is notably diverse and contains several species only infrequently encountered in marshes of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey River, including Juncus effusus and Eryngium yuccifolium. Landward the vegetation grades abruptly into tidal shrub swamp dominated by Alnus serrulata with scattered Nyssa biflora, Fraxinus spp., and Pinus taeda. (The pines have conspicuously flat crowns, even on individuals only 10-15 cm dbh.) Senescence of terminal portions of Zizaniopsis foliage has already occurred.
0 - 80 - Very loosely consolidated (although more consolidated with depth), wet mucky silt with abundant fibric organic matter, which is present throughout the profile; chroma gradually shifts from brown to gray with depth
80+ - Dark gray, silty clay with fibric organic matter
