Observation Narrative
Zizaniopsis miliacea forms tow narrow, perpendicular dominance patches (each perhaps 250 sq. m) on the northwestern corner of an island near Log Landing. The vegetation of the island is primarily low marsh containing Pontederia cordata, Peltandra virginica, Murdannia keisak and Leersia oryzoides and high marsh dominated by Zizania aquatica. Considerable senescence of Zizaniopsis culms has already occurred. Total cover and cover of Zizaniopsis are both lower at the southern end of the plot, where the marsh surface is significantly lower, but this plot location was necessary to avoid a muskrat dwelling, and the width of the vegetation patch constrained plot dimensions. Water depth near northern end of plot at time of sampling ca. 37 cm.
Wet, mucky, unconsolidated, organic-rich clayey silt with abundant coarse, fibric organic matter; depth of water at time of sampling prevented more complete examination of soil profile
