Observation Narrative
Plot location: Shallow depression at E foot of Bald Hill, ca. 100 m W of Rt. 234.
No surface rocks present.
Although the geology of this site is mapped as siltstone, its plastic clay soils with high Mg and Mn levels suggest the likelihood that a small, unmapped diabase still underlies this area. The plot was located in a shallow, seasonally flooded basin that supports sizeable specimens of Quercus palustris and Quercus bicolor. The habitat and vegetation of this small basin contrast sharply with the dry oak and oak-hickory forests of surrounding uplands.
