The vegetation of this plot is an open oak-hickory forest that is representative of many forests occurring on gentle diabase uplands of the Culpepper Basin. Soils have very high Mn levels. There appears to be a significant gap in tree recruitment between the scattered large overstory oaks and hickories (ranging up to 71 cm DBH) and a younger cohort of pole-sized hickories, red cedar, and white oak. This may be the result of repeated livestock grazing prior to the park's establishment.
