Observation Narrative
Plot location: Small stream bottom between powerline right-of-way and Rt. 705, ca. 0.25 miles S of US 29.
No surface rocks present.
The habitat is a small but swampy floodplain along the headwaters of Young Branch. Irregular microtopography with hummocks and sloughs (max. flooding depth = 20 cm) is present. Vegetation is a wetland forest fairly typical for the region. The proximity of this bottom to a road and a newly cleared powerline right-of-way makes it susceptible to siltation and invasion by weeds. A noteworthy floristic feature of this site is Zanthoxylum americanum, disjunct from the mountains.
