Observation Narrative
Plot location: Floodplain slough at edge of Bull Run floodplain, 0.8 miles NNW of Stone Bridge on US 29.
Rock Types Present: A few siltstone fragments.
An elongate (10 X 40m) plot configuration was used to sample this seasonally flooded backswamp slough, which was well drawn-down on the date of visit. The deepest portion of the slough (max. flooding depth = 50 cm) does not support trees, although overhanging Fraxinus pensylvanica shade a substantial portion of the habitat. The more deeply flooded portions of this site support large, nearly monospecific patches of Saururus cernuus while slightly higher hummocks and edges support mixed wetland graminoids and forbs.
