Observation Narrative
Plot location: Low bluff bordering W side of Bull Run floodplain, 0.8 miles NW of Stone Bridge on US 29.
Rock Types Present: Small siltstone outcrops and debris.
The habitat is a steep bluff-like slope undercut by Bull Run. Soils are fertile with notable high Ca, Mg, and Mn levels and encourage several unusual, calciphilic or nutrient-demanding species rarely seen elsewhere in the Park. These include Quercus muhlenbergii, Carex jamesii, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Staphylea trifolia, Cystopteris protrusa, Erigenia bulbosa (outside plot), and Hybanthus concolor (outside plot).
