This plot is representative of many periodically mowed meadows in the Park that support warm-season grass-dominated vegetation. This is basically characterized by an association of Schizachyrium scoparium ssp. scoparium (most abundant on drier sites) and Sorghastrum nutans (most abundant on moister sites). A number of low-cover legumes and composites are typical associates. Although artificially maintained, this vegetation is thought to have prairie-like affinities and may simulate the herbaceous component of naturally open savannas reported from the pre-settlement Culpeper Basin.
