Plot location: Between Park boundary and Chin Ridge drive at south end of Bald Hill.
No surface rocks present.
The plot is situated in an unusually mesic oak-hickory forest occupying a shallow concavity near the crest of a low ridge. Although digitally mapped as siltstone, both soil chemistry and floristic composition of vegetation suggest that the site is underlain by diabase. The forest has a mixed woody flora of Quercus spp., Carya ovalis, Fraxinus americana, Juglans nigra, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, etc. Despite noticeable deer grazing, the herb layer is extremely lush and has a phenomenal abundance of Arisaema triphyllum, a species typically immune to grazing.
