Observation Narrative ? A naturally open sedge wetland fed by a cold, highly alkaline spring. Calcium carbonate precipitate (travertine marl) occurs along the spring run, coating stone and even organic debris. The aspect of the vegetation would probably change markedly by late summer, with plants such as Symplocarpus foetidus and Caltha palustris disappearing and others appearing. Plot located ca. 10 m below the source of the spring, near the Civil War grave site.
