Observation Narrative
The bedrock here is prone to breakage. The ground surface is littered with gravel and stone-sized rock. A considerable amount of mineral soil habitat is present. The vegetation here bears a surprising affinity to that present on the ultramafic soils of Jacks Creek barren in Franklin County. Species shared in common include Schizachyrium scoparium, Parthenium auriculatum, Packera plattensis, Hypericum prolificum, Juniperus virginiana, Pinus virginiana and Asclepias verticillata. Among dolomitic glades, this is the one closest to being oligotrophic; however, a few submesotrophic indicators are present.
Plot located on lower, southwest-facing gladey slope above a gravel road/path cut into side of slope, north of I-81 ca. 1 mi north of Rt. 636 overpass.
Somewhat different vegetation above the plot includes Apocynum cannabinum, Sympyotrichum lanceolatum, Andropogon gerardii, Asparagus officinalis, Leucanthemum vulgare, Physalis heterophylla, Senna marilandica, and Eupatorium altissimum. The adjacent glade across a small vernal stream supports Sporobolus clandestinus, Sorghastum nutans and Rhamnus lanceolata.
