Observation Narrative ? Plot location: ca. 0.9 miles WNW of Pungo Ferry Rd. Plot center is a 35cm DBH Pinus serotina flagged ca. 6.0 meters above the ground. Hummock and hollow microtopography (20cm differential). A classic "high pocosin" community. Essentially a very dense evergreen shrubland with scattered, somewhat stunted Pinus serotina. Soils here consist of relatively undecomposed fibrous peat which has accumulated under ombrotrophic conditions. Fire is another controlling ecological factor in the maintenance of this vegetation. The last fire at this site was in the mid-1980's. Plot was located at the site of a peat core taken during a study of millenium-long fire and vegetation histories commissioned by DCR-DNH.
