Observation Narrative
Plot location: East side of Milldam Creek, ca. 0.4 miles NW of its confluence with the North Landing River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
Water 20-40cm deep in pools, with much filamounteus algae.
The habitat is a strongly hummock-and-hollow marsh greatly dominated by a dense stand of black needle rush (Juncus roemerianus). Juncus roemerianus, a species characteristic of brackish to saline marshes, is extensively distributed in the large, essentially freshwater North Landing River marshes, where it may be a relic of former, more brackish conditions. The species is considered a strong competitor in stressed, floristically depauperate brackish marshes, but maintains dominance in patches among relatively diverse freshwater marsh vegetation here and along the Northwest River.
