Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 0.4 miles SSE of North Landing River. In swamp just S of levee along North Landing River/ intracoastal waterway 0.25 miles SE of Rt. 165. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Very slight hummock and hollow microtopography.
The mineral substrate here supports a swamp forest dominated by medium-age Liquidambar styraciflua and Acer rubrum. Its proximity to a large artificial levee along the Intracoastal Waterway suggests an origin from disturbance, but it seems equally possible that the soil represents a natural alluvial deposit. To the west, this stand grades into a vast, more recently cutover swamp underlain by mucky (sapric) peat and dominated by Nyssa biflora.
[NOTE: GPF, 2011-01-18 - this stand likely represents a formerly wind-tidal forest. Construction of the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent levee cut off any tidal fluctuations from reaching this habitat].
Mapped as mucky peat but sample shows high mineral content.
0-2cm - Litter
2-10cm - gray-brown mineral soil, silt or silty clay with some sand particles.
