Plot location: ca. 0.4 miles NNE of jct Intracoastal waterway and a powerline ROW, 1.5 miels ENE of Centerville Road bridge and 160 meters west of the powerline. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
The plant community in this plot is one of the oldest and most impresive swamp forests documented in southeastern Virginia. Widely but regularly spaced Taxodium distichum and Nyssa biflora well over 1 meter DBH are distributed over an extensive, non-riverine peatland which borders an extreme headwaters of the North Landing River system. Althoguh a few massive stumps indicate that this stand was selectively cut, this cutting was relatively light and took place in the distant past. This vegetation exhibits the very low species richness typical of many non-riverine baldcypress-tupelo forests.
