Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 1.2 miles SE of Land of Promise; plot situated just south of upland edge between first and second boardwalks along state natural area access trail. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Vegetation here is a second-growth swamp forest on mineral soil washed from adjacent uplands. Canopy dominance is almost evenly divided between Nyssa biflora and Liquidambar styraciflua, the latter appearing to be a strong indicator of mineral substrates, at least where it occurs in large numbers. The plot is located just off an upland edge and a large clone of the sedge Carex hyalinolepis, which thrives in various transitional habitats of this river system, dominates the herbaceous layer.
[GPF note: site appears to be frequently flooded by wind tides; standing water also present for significant part of the year]
