Observation Narrative
Plot location: Isolated scrub island in an extensive marsh. 0.5 miles west of confluence of Milldam Creek and North Landing River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
This plot is located in an isolated "island" of Myrica cerifera scrub within a graminoid marsh covering several hundred acres. Normally Myrica scrub communities are well developed in the ecotone between open marshes and adjacent swamp forests. However, aerial photographs reveal a number of small scrub "islands" in the lower North Landing River marshes, and the reasons for their development are enigmatic. The surficial peat supporting this community is very unstable and pitted with deep, muck-filled holes.
Water depth: 6 - 8cm.
Refractometer Measurement: 0 ppt.
0-10cm - Brown, root-rich, fibrous peat (presumably thin over a less firm stratum as substrate is locally "quaking")
(deep holes filled with soupy peat).
