Observation Narrative
Plot location: West side of a small gut on south side of Milldam Creek, 0.4 miles WNW of confluence with North Landing River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Soup-filled holes and small channels present.
The location of this plot is one of a very few stations in the North Landing River system where the typical salt marsh sedge Scirpus robustus occurs. Here, it is dominant with other species characteristic of fresh to oligotrophaline, wind-tidal marshes. Like Juncus roemaerianus, which is abundant in these marshes, the Scirpus may be a relic of former, more brackish conditions which prevailed before inlets connecting Back Bay and Albemarle Sound to the ocean closed.
