Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 1.0 miles SE of Land of Promise; plot located just off upland edge, just west of boardwalk spur of trailhead/ parking area in state natural area access site. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
An extremely mucky, semipermanently flooded Nyssa biflora backswamp. The forest is very open and downfalls frequent due to extremely wet, unstable substrates. The area in and around this plot was observed on a number of occasions throughout 1996. During the late spring/ early summer period of highest inundation, floating mats of Hydrocotyle ranunculoides and Limnobium spongia virtually covered the swamp. These mats decreased significantly in density as water levels subsided in June and July.
[GPF note: habitat appears to be influenced by wind tides, at least occasionally, but lies near the upstream limits of tidal flooding]
