Observation Narrative
Plot situated in the wettest zone of the low pocosin, ca. 1.5 mi ENE of Land of Promise. This area supported the most Carex striata var. brevis. Standing water present only in deer trails. The peat deposit here is quite deep. Fire is absolutely necessary to maintaining this rare form of vegetation. Plants such as Calopogon tuberosus persist in the scrub vegetation as vegetative individuals, and fire would likely release plants such as this from succession.
Bartonia virginica reported from this site by Michael Lipford on 10 March 1990.
