Observation Narrative
An extensive mud flat colonized by Salicornia virginica and S. bigelovii occurs between low salt marsh dominated by Spartina alterniflora and high salt marsh dominated by Spartina patens and Distichlis spicata. This mud flat is remarkable for its size (ca. 10 acres) and the virtual monoculture of Salicornia that occurs at this site. The landward margin of high salt marsh is occupied by an Iva frutescens / Borrichia frutescens - Spartina patens shrub thicket that grades into a salt marsh fringe forest characterized by a Pinus taeda / Juniperus virginiana - Myrica cerifera - Toxicodendron radicans - Smilax association.
Other surface substrate (5%) consists of 1% shell and 4% Spartina wrack.
