Observation Narrative
Two old-growth Pinus taeda trees (138 and 143 cm dbh), possibly > 200 years old, occur on the gently sloping flanks of a drainage swale leading to the eastern end of Jacobus Creek. Tree species occurring with these large pines are Acer rubrum, Quercus velutina, Platanus occidentalis and Nyssa sylvatica. Present in the understory are Ilex opaca, Cornus florida and Magnolia virginiana. Openings are clogged with Lonicera japonica, Toxicodendron radicans, Vitis labrusca, Impatiens capensis and Pilea pumila.
Plot encloses the largest pine stem. Half of plot in wetland.
