Observation Narrative
Plot captures seasonally flooded shrub swamp dominated by Myrica cerifera with some herbaceous openings. Site may be oligohaline. Stand is bordered on landward side by Acer rubrum - Nyssa biflora swamp with Magnolia virginiana understory and on ocean side by low forest dominated by Pinus taeda. Hummocks in plot may represent old cut stumps. See plot sketch on original plot form for more details.
Plot located 2.7 km southeast of Machipongo.
0 - 14 - brown silty loam
9 - water level; 4 cm lower in other parts of plot; measured after 20 minutes
14 - 40 - firm dark gray silty loam with a little medium-coarse sand; orange mottles at top of horizon
40 - 65 - dark gray, very firm clay loam with a little fine sand
65 - 110+ - dark gray, medium-coarse sandy clay loam
