Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 1.2 miles NE of jct. Rt. 168 and VA/ NC state line. Plot located in an extensive forested swamp ca. 100 meters north of an upland edge. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Water is 5 cm deep.
Nutrient Regime: Eutrophic.
The habitat of this plot is an extensive backswamp which is quite removed from channels of the Northwest River and hence only occasionally influenced by very high wind tides. In the vicinity of the plot, Nyssa aquatica (water tupelo) is greatly predominent in a stand which probably followed cutting of the area around 1900. Huge buttresses of the tupelo cover about 10% of the plot surface and, along with exposed mossy surfaces of fallen logs, provide the primary substrate for many of the herbaceous species present.
