Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 100 meters NW of Lake Drummond Causeway Bridge over the Northwest River, south of Cornland.
Slight hummock and hollow microtopography.
Nutrient Regime: Oligotrophic.
A relatively mature second-growth forest probably logged for baldcypress long ago. Habitat is seasonally flooded, with shallow mineral soil over deep, root-rich peat. The small channel of the river was created by dredging, and the bottomland here is essentially an amorphous, seasonally flooded plain similar to the wetter portions of the Great Dismal Swamp.
NOTE: Although the geology of this area is mapped as Holocene intertidal mud and peat deposits, the composition of soil cores taken from this area are similar to, if not identical with, those of Holocene swamp deposits of the Great Dismal Swamp. The core from the plot revealed layers of black sapric peat, while a core from the other side of the dredged river channel revealed both black and red-brown peats.
NOTE: This site was completely inundated on 1995-05-10 when visited briefly for reconnaissance. There was still some standing water when it was briefly visited on 1995-06-27.
