Observation Narrative ? Plot location: Marsh on west side of Major Branch of the Northwest River, 0.65 miles NW of Rt. 168 Bridge. Plot center marked by a 1" white PVC pipe. CA. 10% of plot has deep holes filled with soupy muck. NOTE: Water level of river ca. 25cm below high water mark on trees on both dates of visit. One of several pocket marshes along the major branch of the Northwest River just west of Rt. 168, representing the extreme upstream limit of marsh vegetation along this river. Invasion of shrubs (especially Myrica cerifera, Rosa palustris, Salix carolinana, and sapling Acer rubrum) appears to be increasing in these marshes. The vegetation of this plot is somewhat representative of classic, low-statured marshes in which Eleocharis fallax, E. rostellata, and Cladium mariscoides are prevalent, but the prominence of Polygonum arifolium, Murdannia keissak, and Peltandra virginica suggests a higher nutrient regime than usual for this community type. Eleocharis quadrangulata, which is very infrequent in Northwest River wetlands, is an unusual component of the stand.
