Observation Narrative ? Plot location: Narrow marsh along south side of a tributary of the Northwest River, ca. 0.45 miles SSE of the mouth of Indian Creek. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe. Average water depth= 2cm. Refractometer measurement: 0 ppt (8/1/95); 2 ppt (10/16/95). The habitat is a tributary pocket marsh dominated by a coarse stand of black needle rush (Juncus roemerianus). A number of other forbs and graminoids, the most interesting of which is Cladium jamaicense, occur among the needle rush at low cover value. The extensive distribution of Juncus roemerianus, a species characteristic of brackish to saline marshes, is a notable feature of the essentially freshwater Northwest River system, where it may be a relic. The species is considered a strong competitor in stressed, floristically depauperate brackish marshes, but maintain dominance in patches among relatively diverse freshwater marsh vegetation here and along the North Landing River.
