Observation Narrative
Plot location: Marsh 0.8 miles south of the confluence of the Northwest River and Indian Creek, near the headwaters of a tributary gut. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Average water depth= 2- 4cm.
Refractometer measurements: (8/1/95)= 0 ppt; (10/16/95)= 3 ppt.
Plots C14-C17, all located within a 0.5 ha area, represent the variation within an outstanding marsh community characterized by Eleocharis fallax, Eleocharis rostellata, Pontaderia cordata, and Cladium mariscoides. Located in the interior of an extensive marsh complex well away from the major guts and channels, the habitat presumably receives fewer nutrient inputs and less frequent flushing than the channel edge habitats supporting mixed tall marsh vegetation. In C14-17, the relatively short stature (avg. ca. 50cm tall) of the vegetation, low floristic diversity, and graminoid dominance presumably indicate oligotrophy. This plot (C16) represents the maximum floristic diversity of the occurrence at this location, with mixed dominance of graminoids and forbs.
