Plot location: ca. 0.15 miles NE of the VA/NC line where it crosses the Northwest River. Plot located in a sharp bend of a tributary. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Average difference between tops of hummocks and hollow bottoms = 35cm; maximum = 55cm.
NOTE: High water mark on trees in 25cm higher than current water level in hollows.
Refractometer measurement: 0 ppt.
A forested, wind-tidally flooded wetland dominated by Taxodium distichum and Pinus taeda. This community type frequently borders the open marshes in the lower reaches of the Northwest River. Peat substrates here are relatively firm and undecomposed compared with the mucky soils of backswamp baldcypress-tupelo swamps. Floristic diversity is also comparatively low, with Myrica cerifera and Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis often greatly prevalent in the shrub and herbaceous layers.
