Observation Narrative ? Plot location: Marsh bordering west side of the Northwest River, 0.7 miles NNW of the VA/NC line where it crosses the river. Plot center marked by a 1" white PVC pipe. Water depth= 1- 8cm. Refractometer measurement: (8/1/95)= 0 ppt; (10/16/95)= 3 ppt. A variant of low to mid-height, fresh to oligohaline, wind-tidal marshes in which Acorus americanus dominates in dense swards. Despite the prevalence of the rhizomatous Acorus, diversity of associated species is still high and most typical species of the Northwest River marshes are present. Small patches of similar composition have been noted in several places along the shoreline of the river, including the shore opposite this plot, and appear to mark old clearings and disturbances. This plot is the only locality where the typical salt marsh grass Distichlis spicata was recorded on either the Northwest or North Landing Rivers. Despite a lack of measurable water salinity, the plants of this species were visibly exuding salt on 1 August 1995.
