Observation Narrative
Plot location: Marsh just S. of an upland edge ca. 0.75 miles ENE of the VA/NC line where it crosses the northwest river. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
A fairly typical, apparently oligotrophic, mid-height interior marsh dominated by Scirpus americanus. An unusual plant occurring here is Ludwigia sphaerocarpa, which is not known elsewhere in marshes of the Northwest River. This is a rather unusual habitat for that species, which is almost entirely associated with seasonally flooded, mostly disturbed depression wetlands (seasonal ponds, ditches, etc.) in Virginia. Although the species is reported to be quite polymorphic, the morphology of these Northwest River specimens appears distinct from that of other Virginia plants, and seems worthy of further research.
