Observation Narrative
This plot is a composite of three contiguous 100sq meter circular plots.
Plot location: Swamp Forest between Indian Creek and a small embayed marsh, just north of the Northwest River.
Mapped as MH-Mixed alluvial land but soil cores indicates equivalency to Pocaty Peat or Dorovan Mucky Peat.
A narrow strip of baldcypress-dominated swamp forest between Indian Creek and a small marsh embayment. Wind tide influences are frequent in this locality. Nyssa aquatica becomes more prominent close to the channel edge.
NOTE: A transect of 11 contiguous, 11.28 meter diameter, 100 square meter circular plots was established in this locality, running from an upland edge across the marsh and swamp forests on either side to the channel of Indian Creek. This plot represents a composite of the three contiguous swamp forest plots south of the marsh. Cover values for individual species were converted to numerical values using the mid-points of cover class ranges, and these were summed, averaged over the three plots, and reconverted to cover class ranges. This method was employed to provide greater consistency with standard forest plot size (400 square meters) in the data set.
